Why Early Detection and Support Matter More Than Ever

This September marks Vascular Disease Awareness Month – an opportunity to raise awareness of one of the UK’s most widespread yet under-recognised health conditions.

Vascular disease affects the arteries, veins, and lymphatic system, and is a major contributing factor in chronic wounds, skin breakdown, and limb complications due to reduced blood flow and poor circulation.

For those living with or at risk of vascular conditions, the likelihood of developing pressure ulcers increases significantly, often requiring specialist care and preventative support.

At Pressure Care Management, we’re proud to play a role in that preventative picture, offering not only tailored equipment but also education, training, and assessment services to help carers, clinicians and patients manage pressure ulcer risks more effectively and efficiently.

Vascular Disease and Pressure Ulcers

Vascular disease can impair the body’s ability to deliver oxygen-rich blood to tissues, especially in the lower limbs. As such, when combined with immobility or limited mobility, diabetes, or existing skin conditions, the results can be severe:

  • Ischaemia (restricted blood flow) slows healing
  • Venous insufficiency causes swelling, oedema and skin fragility
  • Neuropathy or numbness means early damage may go unnoticed
  • Existing ulcers or wounds become chronic due to poor perfusion

These factors mean that for vascular patients, even low levels of pressure over bony areas – such as heels, sacrum or ankles – can cause significant skin breakdown, sometimes in just a few hours.

The Importance of Early Detection

One of the most important ways to reduce pressure injuries in vascular patients is through early identification of risk. That means:

  • Routine vascular assessments for at-risk groups (e.g., diabetics, smokers, over-65s)
  • Inspection of lower limbs for signs of colour change, swelling, pain or skin changes
  • Postural analysis to check for pressure points when seated or in bed
  • Timely referrals to tissue viability, vascular or podiatry specialists

When pressure risk is identified early, simple interventions can prevent long-term complications.
