Caring for the Carers This National Carers’ Week
This National Carers’ Week (9–15 June), we’re recognising the vital work of the 5.8 million carers across the UK, both unpaid and professional, and highlighting something often overlooked in conversations about care: the impact of pressure care training and equipment knowledge on both patient outcomes and the wellbeing of their carers.
From family carers supporting loved ones at home, to support workers, HCAs and community nurses on the frontline, the right education and product use can make a world of difference. Not only does it reduce harm to patients, but it also reduces physical strain, emotional pressure, and the risk of burnout in those delivering the care.
The Importance of Equipment Knowledge
Having access to pressure relief products such as the Posiperle Postural Positioning Cushion range or even the OysterPerle Microbead Mattress is one thing, knowing how to use them correctly is another entirely.
When training is lacking or rushed, it can lead to:
- Incorrect product placement and further pain/pressure (e.g. heels not fully offloaded)
- Inconsistent repositioning routines
- Equipment being removed because it’s uncomfortable or misunderstood
- Unnecessary lifting, bending, or manual handling strain on carers
At Pressure Care Management, we believe education and confidence in the use of specialist pressure care products are as important as the products themselves.
Equipment Knowledge Leads to Safer Care
When carers know how to use positioning aids, cushions, and offloading systems properly, several positive outcomes follow:
- Patients stay safer, more comfortable, and less likely to develop pressure ulcers
- Carers avoid awkward lifting and repetitive strain
- Time is saved, with fewer repositioning errors or equipment misuse
- Stress and emotional fatigue are reduced
Whether it’s using a PosiHeel to float the heel, applying a leg trough to stabilise the lower limb, or adjusting cushions to prevent sacral pressure, small improvements in technique go a long way to improving patient outcomes and carer wellbeing.
Breakfast Byte or Lunch & Learn
Here at Pressure Care Management, we’re passionate about providing turnkey pressure care and pressure ulcer prevention solutions, ensuring carers of all backgrounds are empowered, not only with pressure ulcer prevention products such as positioning cushions and mattresses, but with the knowledge they need to use them safely and confidently.
That’s why we offer free bite-sized learning sessions for our customers and your teams, known as Breakfast Byte or Lunch & Learn sessions.
Preventing Burnout
Burnout is a growing issue in the care sector, and physical fatigue is a major contributor to that.
According to Carers UK, over 60% of carers report back pain or musculoskeletal strain due to moving and handling.
As such, providing purpose-designed positioning products such as those offered through Pressure Care Management reduces the need for frequent physical intervention.
When carers are confident in using these tools:
- They experience less physical wear-and-tear
- Patients can remain in therapeutic positions longer
- Everyone’s experience of care improves
And in environments with high turnover or staff shortages, simple, intuitive equipment paired with hands-on guidance can relieve a huge burden.
