Pressure relief in bed

Pressure relief in bed can be an ongoing concern for many people, and especially those who are elderly, disabled or recovering from injury or surgery. So, how do you relieve pressure in bed?

Pressure relief in bed

Change positions often: a particularly effective way to relieve pressure in bed is to change positions often and ensure you or the person you’re caring for is regularly – every 2 hours or even more frequently if necessary.

Check for skin concerns: it’s also recommended to check regularly for any skin concerns such as existing pressure sores & ulcers, signs of redness and/or skin breakages/breakdowns, especially in bony areas or vulnerable areas of the body, and ensure not to further aggravate any areas of skin that do show signs of a pressure sore emerging.

Use positioning pillows: positioning pillows are a very effective and efficient way to prevent pressure sores & ulcers as positioning pillows redistribute pressure and provide support to focused areas of the body such as knees, heels and the head & neck.

Use a pressure mattress: a pressure mattress or tilt system is specifically designed to prevent pressure areas developing, and improve tissue viability; in the interest of bedsore prevention and the prevention of pressure sores & ulcers. Where possible, it could be worth considering a specialist mattress for long term pressure relief in bed.

Be pressure management aware: understanding the very fundamentals of pressure care and pressure management will also ultimately contribute to pressure relief, when seated as well as when in bed – understanding pressure management helps you understand what causes pressure sores and everything you can do to prevent or care for them.
